In 2014, Vail Resorts, which had operated Canyons since 2013, acquired Park City Mountain Resort, uniting two former rivals of the Wasatch into one immense and spectacular destination. In the summer of 2015, the company installed a new gondola across Pinecone Ridge, seamlessly connecting the two resorts. Canyons has long been known for its contemporary luxury lodging, diverse terrain, and easy slope-side access; Park City, on the other hand, is steeped in history and full of character. The combined area, now known as Park City Mountain, brings together these unique elements, creating a destination far greater than the sum of its parts.
The creation of this mega resort was no small feat. In 2015, Vail Resorts invested over $50 million into the new resort – an unprecedented infusion of cash in a single year. This ambitious project, the largest one-year capital investment in US ski-industry history, introduced new lifts, upgraded restaurants, improved infrastructure (like enhanced snowmaking capabilities), and new trails, elevating the Park City guest experience to an entirely new level.
